Pointless, boring...a complete waste of time August 14, 2010 K I rented this movie because I had a Red Box coupon. Even though I paid nothing for it, I still have buyer's remorse.
I can't believe some people gave this thing 5 stars!
The acting was awful (Costner included), the characters were completely flat, and the plot (if you can even call it that) started out dull, remained dull, and went absolutely nowhere.
Not one frame of this film was even remotely scary, or interesting for that matter. It's like the writers just crammed in as many horror cliches as possible and called it a day.... And the worst part is that you can really tell the writers meant for the cliches to be taken seriously.
Some of the silliest aspects of the film for me were the overuse of ominous piano music, and all the random thunder claps (yes, thunder claps....I told you there were cliches!)
I have to hand it to the sound crew though....they did their best to create a mood to compensate for Costner's cardboard performance, the cheesy special effects, and the dead-end snooze fest plot.
They failed of course, but they tried.
Please don't waste money on this.
Old School but still effective August 4, 2010 Megan K. Donnelly (Salt Lake City) I've seen Luis Berdijo's "REC", so I knew this film would at least be spooky in atmosphere, and it did not dissapoint. Although most of the story is cliched to the point of banality, it does have two bright spots:
1) Less is more in a story like this, and because Berdijo films the more violent scenes with much left to the imagination, it's all the more chilling. The scene where the elderly babysitter meets her gruesome fate genuinely scared me.
2) A truly original horror monster. I don't think this particular Native American myth has been touched on in movies or books. Some reviewers might find it a little ridiculous, but is it any more ridiculous than the concept of the vampire or genetically engineered alien/human hybrids?
Kevin Costner (who usually acts with all the charisma of a plank of wood) does a pretty good job of a dad who's wife has walked out on him and his kids, and he's left with the sole parental duty of raising them. He wasn't much of a father before, so his relationship with his kids is already fragile. And like most movie single-parents who are emotionally damaged, he moves his family into a rambling, decaying house in the middle of nowhere and right next to the site of a massacre. His sullen pre-teen daughter develops an unhealthy attraction for a huge mound of dirt on the property, and things start to get weird.
This movie is worth watching. If you appreciate fine directing and the set up of beautiful shots, a spooky soundtrack and seeing Kevin Costner actually be effective in a movie roll, you'll like this film. If you are looking for a more original story line, you'll be dissapointed.
Not as bad as some reviewers would have you believe August 4, 2010 J. Smith (Hingham, MA United States) After reading other reviews here I was expecting to eject the thing 10 minutes into it. The story did have some holes - one that drove me crazy was when he saw a bunch of bugs in a drawer. I would have thought the next scene was getting an exterminator. They just skipped over it as though it never happened.
All that aside, this was rather and creepy with good special effects. It had some memorable creatures too.
Surprise Horror Movie August 3, 2010 Totally Honest Reviewer (USA) I loved this movie, and Kevin Costner as the father of a teenage girl and young boy. The story kept my interest all the way through until the end. And, wow, what an ending! Started out with sort of a super-natural story-line and ended up as a horror. Slow-paced at first, but then progresses to a faster heart-pounding pace at the end. If you are a horror fan, I think you will like this movie. Others may criticize Costner for taking on this role. This film is erie and suspenseful. As for the ending - well, see it and you be the judge.
Absorbing mystery horror movie August 2, 2010 Laser Point 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Kevin Costner plays a divorced father who is now living with his two children in a lovely old house with spacious grounds. On the grounds is a large mound which turns out to have great significance for this family as it had for the previous owners.
I liked this movie for the same reason that some did not. It builds very carefully to the horrifying end. If you have ever been truely horrified at something, you know that at first your mind rejects what is happening. Costner gradually becomes more and more alarmed as the evidence of something very bad builds-especially as it affects his children, particularly his young teen aged daughter.
I have never seen Costner play a freightened character before and he was absolutely terrific as he tries to cope and keep a handle on mundane reality while becoming more and more terrified.
For me the movie succeeds on its own terms. In other words it does not presume to be great "art". It is intended as an absorbing horror mystery and succeeds as quite good entertainment.
